It was a really nice and very successful community potluck. As one of the participants mentioned – great food, great weather and great neighbours.
People enjoyed food, sun and nature and a chance to meet each other. Total turnout was above 60 people. Two Councillors – Our Ward Councillor Howard Shore and Ward 6 Councillor Alan Ho joined the event.
Howard Shore spoke to the participants and told us about the plans to introduce a Community Liaison Group to work with the City of Markham on further initiatives to protect our Park and its wildlife habitat, about the plans later this Fall to discuss at the Council meeting the status of giving our greenspace an official park designation.
Overall, the first community potluck was a great fun, kids enjoyed sports actives and both kids and their parents made many new friends among the neighbours who joined the potluck.
Even guests from Sunshine Coast, Australia greeted our Settlers’ Park community and have given to Councillor Shore a letter from the Mayor of Sunshine Coast to the Mayor of Markham introducing the Friendship Force, an international citizens exchange organization that promotes piece and friendship throughout the planet by leading international exchanges in 54 countries.
It was common opinion that SPRA should plan more events in the future and continue building a strong and active community of friends and responsible residents.
